The Smashing Pumpkins mixed things up a little bit Wednesday for the last night of their 11-show stand at the Fillmore. After a fine opening set by the 88, Billy Corgan & Co. came out for a 70-minute acoustic set, including stripped-down versions of oldies “Drown,” “In My Body,” and “Blue Skies Bring Tears”; selections from the new “Zeitgeist” album such as “For God and Country” and “Neverlost”; and some never-recorded numbers. At one point, the rest of the band left the stage as Billy performed a new one whose chorus goes “I’m doing the best I can/So f— off.” Corgan was pretty stoic throughout and said nothing besides “thank you” for the first half-hour. At one point a fan hungry for some contact screamed “Talk to us, Billy.” Corgan replied, “Talk to you? What do you want me to say? I’m damned if I do, and damned if I don’t.” That was about it for pleasantries during the first half. After a 30-minute break the band – Corgan, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, bassist Ginger Reyes, guitarist Jeff Schroeder and keyboardist Lisa Harriton — returned for a rock set. My notes are really sketchy, but among the songs I recall were “Hummer,” “Shame,” “Tarantula” and “United States.” I was with a civilian who has a normal day job in San Jose, so we bailed around 12:50 a.m. with the band still going strong. Can anyone report on what we missed? In all, the new lineup seemed in good shape, with Chamberlin particularly ferocious. Corgan was mildly cranky but let down his guard a bit during the second set to thank the folks at the Fillmore for their hospitality. From reports I’ve seen from the earlier Fillmore shows, this one was considerably more focused and less indulgent, although we may have left before the ultimate freakout. I’ll try to post a complete set list when I find one. Were any of y’all there? What did you think? |
