April 4, 2002 - Blue Note - Columbia, MO, US Concert review by Christopher Siva - Zwan : Concert Reviews My friend and I made the 4 1/2 hour drive to Columbia to see Zwan. I've been a Smashing Pumpkins fan since about 1998. I saw Smashing Pumpkins in 2000. I'm also a drummer and Jimmy is one of my biggest influences. My friend who has never been a Smashing Pumpkins fan is also a drummer, but isn't really a Jimmy fan. He's had to endure hours of me talking on and on about Jimmy's drumming, so I was pretty amazed when he went to the concert. We got there about 1 hour before the show started and we stood outside with all the other fans eagerly awaiting the show. We got inside The Blue Note which is a decent small-sized venue. During the first band we sat up in the balcony with a pretty nice view. The first band "The Follow" was pretty good. It was a 3 piece band. It's hard to categorize their sound. I would classify it as very melodic and similar to U2. After their set, I saw them take a cover off of Jimmy's Machina Era Drumset, so that just helped to increase my excitement for the show. Then the lights went down and I heard the first notes of "Dust My Broom". My friend and I raised down the stairs to get onto the floor. From the first notes I knew it was going to be awesome. I still love this song (Dust My Broom) since it has some great rhythms and stuff. We probably ended up about 15-20 feet from the stage. It was great to see Billy and Jimmy (and the rest of Zwan) up close. This was the first show with Paz and I think she did great. She adds a new element of talent to Zwan's lineup. At the show I noticed how up close Billy looks like he's about 20 years old. Throughout the show Jimmy mainly stared straight ahead, but even my friend (a non-Jimmy fan) agreed he played some very nice things. Throughout the band's set they played through a variety of songs from the riff-heavy hard rock songs to dream pop songs where Billy's vocals soared over the light guitar. Billy did a great job as always of interacting with the crowd. The crowd loved them of course. Billy even spent a couple of minutes try to pronounce David Pajo's last name correctly. He also joked with Matt Sweeney how he got James's old Smashing Pumpkins guitar pics. They went through an amazing setlist and then played a 2 song encore including a great version of "All Day and All Of The Night" by the Kinks. I was truly blown away by the band's power on the stage. My expectations were somewhat low before the show, but they definetely changed after the show. We waited outside their bus for maybe 20 minutes, but I never saw the band. The bus eventually left. So to sum it up, Zwan puts on an amazing show that will have you eagerly awaiting more. They more than exceeded my expectations. |
