March 27, 2008 - Hordern Pavilion - Sydney, Australia Concert review by ken Siva - Zwan : Concert Reviews It was 1996 when i saw the Pumpkins play 3 shows at the Hordern Pavilion. 12 years later the crowd may be smaller but the fans were all united in their welcome return to the venue they rocked in the 90's. Tonight was the 8th time the Pumpkins would play Sydney. 14 years since The Pumpkins first rocked Sydney at the 1994 Big Day Out and their sideshow at Selinas,Coogee Bay. it was just after 8pm when the band came on and started with Porcelina. It was a predictable and welcoming first song which they seem to have been opening wh in the majority of their 2008 shows. As Porecelina ended it was straight into Behold the Nightmare One of the highlights from the night for me was the back to back songs of Tonight Tonight and Mayonaise. The crowd really got into it,singing along and reconnecting with the band that rocked their youth over 10 years ago. Superchrist rocked us with the power of the Pumpkins followed by the first of the Zeigeist album song Cmon Lets Go The acoustic Perfect with Jimmy on tamborine was beautiful as well as Lily. Billy said he was glad to be in Australia. A great place to get over New Zealand's crowds as he rolled his eyes. He also mentioned that the reason he doesnt dance on stage is because he doesnt want to be seen dancing like singer turned politician Peter Garrett from the Oils. I loved Stand Inside Your Love.it really rocked. There were screams from the crowd to play Zero and Silverfuck. Billy smiled and said "we are not playing Silverfuck" i was screaming out Soma but in vain and a complete long shot as they haven't played since reuniting. Another highlight for me was the enigmatic mushroom driven Starla. One that i was hoping they would play but was not overly optomistic they would. i loved Crush. The one and only Gish song they would play. Recently back on the setlist for their Australasian tour Jimmy and his drumming was awe inspiring in United States which must have gone for over 10-15 minutes. The encore was Cherub Rock. Classic Pumpkins at its best! A great way to end the evening. At the end of the gig Billy would walk around to both corners of the stage thanking and clapping the fans. The appreciation from the fans is mutual. |
