After a long five hour drive, my cousin and I arrived outside the Pageant around 5:15 and the line had already extended to the back of the place. After standing around for a few minutes Matt Sweeney walked out from one of the two back exit doors. Strikingly the crowd didn't rush over towards him, which was lucky for us. We were able to get him to sign our ticket stubs and we overheard him talking to these people from Alabama about Jimmy Buffet's sister's restaurant. It was pretty funny. Moments later Billy walked out accompanied by two security guys and started talking with the crowd and shook a few hands. A girl gave him a late birthday card, which he humbly accepted. Sadly before I could speak with him, he said something to the extent of "I'm hungry, I'm gonna go get something to eat" but who can blame a guy for being hungry? After Billy had left the scene, Paz and Jimmy came out talked to some people for a little while. I took a few pictures for this one guy with Jimmy but I didn't have a camera of my own :'-( Then Paz, Jimmy, and Matt headed off in the opposite direction of Billy. My day had already been made and the show hadn't even started. Ok, that's enough about the pre-concert experience, on to the show. There really wasn't a bad seat in the house and we were able to get a spot about 20 feet from the stage which blew my mind, however there were three huge guys standing in front of me, one of which would not keep his hands down which really sucked. The opening act, The Children's Hour, sounded like a mellowed out version of the Cranberries, for better or worse. Finally, Zwan took the stage. They opened up with Lyric and the crowd went nuts. I can't remember the order in which the set went but they played:
Honestly
Endless Summer
Of a Broken Heart
El Sol
Don't Let Me Down
Ride A Black Swan
Jesus I
Settle Down
Heartsong
Yeah!
Friends as Lovers
Mary Star
For Your Love
Spilled Milk (fucking awesome!!!!!)
Before they played Friends as Lovers, Billy announced, "My grandma is here tonight, she's 91 years old and she still rocks, this next song goes out to her." Once they had played the first five or six songs Billy took some time to talk to the audience and he mentioned how he talked about Nelly the rapper the last time he played in St. Louis and how he had gotten so big since then. He told us that the whole band-aid on the side of the face thing was all his idea. It was quite hilarious. Someone in the crowd held up a sign that read "Pajo for president!" and Billy explained that if Davey were president we wouldn't be at war right now which i thought was pretty cool. They walked off stage and bid us farewell after playing an extended version of Mary Star but after we had cheered them for five or ten minutes they came back out and played my personal favorite, Spilled Milk and an electric version of Of a Broken Heart. Billy showered the front row with picks and Jimmy launched his sticks into the crowd and the show was over. My neck still hurts like hell and my voice is gone but it's all for a good cause. I saw Tool play twice last year and this show kicked both of those shows' asses hands down. Thank you so much Zwan and especially Matt. ROCK ON!!!
