January 21, 2003 - Metro - Chicago, IL, US Concert review by Davin (dmehrbani at attbi dot com) Siva - Zwan : Concert Reviews Wow. That word pretty much sums it up. Having gone to the 01-20-2003 show at the Metro just two nights ago, I couldn't help but compare the two. Tonight's show, however, was undoubtedly better. Though the setlist was only 1 song longer, the ferocity of the music during "Jesus, I" and "Riverview" was much greater. Billy did not waste as much time speaking to the audience, introducing the band, etc. He was all about playing the music tonight. Having seen The Pumpkins 17 times (yes, I know...I am a freak) I have always put the live shows above any album recordings. Somehow, the music seems *more real* when Billy's mood comes into play. The small differences in tempo, vocals, etc. really give the songs more of an edge. It was this same type of passion that was obvious during this show. Having already warmed up to the Metro crowds at previous shows, I think the band really got a sense of what the fans responded to. And boy, did they deliver! My only complaint was the crowd. Though they were polite and all that, no body moved! How some can stand still and bob their head to Riverview, a kick-ass song about Chicago, I do not know! I'm not trying to advocate violent moshing here...but people should at least move to the music. Frankly, I find it hard to stay still with such good music taking over my soul. Overall, Zwan is truly showing the signs of longevity. They continue to play many songs that aren't on the album, and with rumors of a b-sides album, acoustic album, etc. I think Zwan is here to stay! It is obvious from how "tight" the songs are that there is definitely a musical bond between the memebers, similar to the strong bond between Billy and Jimmy. Certainly, there's a strong musical future for Zwan, though I hope they continue to bring their intensity, passion, and overall "joy to be playing music" attitude with them. -Davin |
