April 9, 2003 - Pompano Amphitheater - Pompano, FL, US Concert review by Justin (JMaN0913 at aol dot com) Siva - Zwan : Concert Reviews What a difference less than three years makes. I saw the Pumpkins play in Clearwater, FL. back in May (I think it was May) of 2000. While I enjoyed the show very much, it just seemed like Billy wasn't into it... that, however, has changed. I've gone to see two nights in a row of Zwan. I had seen them play in Orlando the night before, and I must say... that show was the best concert I've ever gone to. The Pompano show was ALMOST as good as Orlando, but maybe because I didn't get to hear "Spilled Milk" again, my review is tainted. However, we were lucky enough to have Billy's dad, William Corgan Sr., play the last encore for us! I can't remember the setlist, but they did open up with Endless Summer I believe. The hightlight from the show (as was the Orlando show), was "Jesus, I / God's Gonna Set This World On Fire". I'm sure most of us have some early version of "God's" downloaded, but they've refined the song to rock hard. Matt, Paz, David and Billy sing the vocals, and it's just awesome. I hope this version makes it's way onto the internet, because everyone should hear it. I think it's quite funny how David and Matt stood by, watching Corgan embarrass all modern day guitarists, doing 7 minute long solo's. He, Billy, by FAR, is the best guitarist TODAY. Just awesome. Not to forget David, who impressed me with his ability to play drums (for the opening act, Childrens Hour), but also piano and bass, too. He's like the utility guy in the band. Matt great too, as he rocks back and fourth playing guitar. I think, as the other reviewer said, the fans (or, rather, the male fans) weren't watching Paz for her bass (and violin, and piano) playing, but because she's hot. I guess that's what short shorts will do for ya (or a skirt, as she wore the night before). And of course, Jimmy, who had a kick ass drum solo tonight... I would say he's the best modern day drummer today. Anyhow, as I said, Billy's dad played for the encore, and I'm not sure what blues song it was, but it sounded like a classic blues song. I had the good fortune to be at the amphitheater before the concert began, while the band was doing it's soundcheck, and heard them figuring out how to play this blues song. Quite interesting. It kept breaking down, and they'd start again, but they pulled it off on stage. Billy and his dad also got into a solo contest, where William would play something, and then Billy would try to up him, and so on. |
